Sandbag Sites and Current Availability

Valley Water provides free sandbags for Santa Clara County residents.
Depending on the location and current conditions, filled sandbags or loose sand and empty bags for self-filling may be available.
Bring a shovel just in case.

Almaden Dam and Reservoir

Almaden Reservoir was built in 1935 and is one of 10 reservoirs operated by Valley Water.
The reservoir can store approximately 1,590 acre-feet of water.

Dam Safety

Almaden Dam is classified as a high-hazard dam because of the potential consequences to people
and property downstream if a dam failure occurred. Valley Water’s seismic evaluation found the
dam embankment to be stable. Improvements are still needed to address the intake structure,
spillway and aging infrastructure.

Valley Water provides official inundation maps showing areas that could be affected by a
hypothetical failure of Almaden Dam. These maps are intended as planning guidance; actual
